The Death of Christina Taylor Green - Tucson Arizona - January 8, 2011

This tragedy takes me back to that terrible day in November 1963 when we lost a President. The promise and hope Christina Taylor Green meant to the children of America, is no less significant than the promise and hope John F. Kennedy meant to the American people in 1963. I know, I was there.

The death of that beautiful little girl is really the centerpiece of this assassination attempt, because along with Christina, a little bit of America died.

  1. That's a very apt comparison. I was in 9th grade when President Kennedy was assassinated. I will never forget the tragedy of that day, how it so deeply affected the hope and promise of a nation. I can see how, in a similar way, young Christina's untimely death, a child born of hope on 9/11 with a future so full of promise, is a terrible loss and no less significant for the children of her generation.

The saddest thing about that awful tragedy in Tucson, the thing that makes me cry the most, is that a monster extinguished the bright light of a beautiful 9-year-old child.

Thank you for including magz's poem from Newsvine in your posting. It's a very moving, heartfelt poem that expresses how all of us feel.

  2. Thanks for stopping by JL, I was 24 years old running a small general contracting business in those days. The news about JFK being shot came as a shock, and I recall the painful wait for the update on his condition, when it came it was Walter Cronkite that was assigned the awful burden of telling America the President had died ... he could hardly get the words out.

The wait for news of Rep. Gifford was a little different. With so many bureaus trying to get the news, the reports were confusing and contradictory. At one point I even heard a report she had died. I was posting updates on my Newsvine column every 10 minutes. Then finally CNN got a hospital spokesperson on camera that confirmed the Congresswoman was alive and in surgery.

I agree with you about the death of little Christina Green. To me, the death of that beautiful little girl is the focal point of this assassination attempt, because along with Christina, a little bit of America died.
